Frequently Asked Questions

What is Counselling Psychology (and how is it different from counselling/psychotherapy/clinical psychology/psychiatry)?

Counselling Psychology, like counselling, has its philosophical roots in Carl Rogers’ humanistic psychology, which privileges the subjective, lived experience of each unique human being. Like counsellors, Counselling Psychologists place greater emphasis on “being with” rather than “doing to” their clients. Counselling Psychologists, like Clinical Psychologists, diverge from counselling by undertaking a more rigorous training route and clinical work is informed by empirical research and scientific evidence. As part of their training, counselling psychologists must demonstrate competence in at least two different models of therapy, including person-centered, psychodynamic and CBT approaches. Psychodynamic psychotherapy places a heavier emphasis on the development of psychological distress in childhood and aims to address the the underlying causes of emotional suffering. Counselling Psychologists, therefore, often deliver psychotherapy, as part of their work. Psychiatry is a branch of medicine and Counselling Psychologists are not medically qualified to diagnose or prescribe medication.

How do I know if counselling psychology is really right for me?

Research suggests that the most important predictor of therapeutic outcome, regardless of the type of therapy, is the quality of the therapeutic relationship. So what really matters is feeling safe, comfortable and understood by your therapist.

How does virtual therapy work?

Virtual therapy takes place over Zoom, a video conferencing software, which meets GDPR requirements. You are encouraged find a private space from which to take your therapy sessions, and a laptop or desk top screen are advised to get the most from our time together.

Why do you charge for missed appointments?

Once we agree a regular time to meet, this time is yours regardless of whether we meet or not. I am not able to fill your appointment time at short notice and have limited availability. Sessions are cancelable up to 48 hours in advance, at which point you will incur the full cost of the session.

How long will therapy take and how will I know when to end?

At our first session we agree a therapy contract together. Usually we will book an initial block of sessions and review this before agreeing further work. On average, a shorter block of CBT or counselling will take roughly 10 – 12 sessions. For more long-term problems and Schema Therapy 24 sessions+ would be recommended. We will discuss when you feel ready to end a longer-term piece of work and will spend time preparing for this in advance, but you are, of course, free to terminate therapy at any time you see fit.

Do you offer a concessionary rate?

I offer a limited number of concessionary slots to those who may be unemployed or on low income.
